Honoring Heroes: The Transformation of Crown Point's Tank Memorial Garden
This week on Wednesdays with Wayne, we're taking a closer look at a project that was about much more than plants.
Wayne had the honor of working alongside the City of Crown Point, the American Legion, and TBR Lawncare & Landscaping to redesign and refresh the Path of Service Memorial Garden surrounding the World War II Sherman Tank and Veterans Monument in Crown Point.
Join Wayne for a behind-the-scenes look at the installation process, the thought behind the design, and the plant selections chosen for their resilience, sustainability, and ability to thrive in challenging conditions. You'll also get to see the completed project and learn about the meaning and purpose behind this special space dedicated to honoring those who have served.
We're grateful to have played a small part in helping create a lasting tribute for our community's veterans.

Path of Service Memorial Garden
The Path of Service Memorial Garden is a living tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of America’s veterans. Designed around a historic WWII Sherman Tank and veterans monument, the landscape symbolizes Duty, Honor, and Service through resilient, sustainable plantings selected for Indiana’s climate and roadside conditions.
The garden’s structure begins with Columnar Norway Spruce, representing vigilance, strength, and eternal remembrance. Their upright form frames the memorial space like an honor guard standing watch.
Flowing throughout the landscape are native-inspired ornamental grasses including Blackhawks Big Bluestem, Northwind Switch Grass, Prairie Dropseed, and Karl Foerster Grass. These grasses symbolize perseverance, discipline, and the movement of soldiers advancing together in service. Their seasonal motion softens the strength of the military monument while bringing life and reflection to the memorial.
Bobo Hydrangea introduces a sense of peace, dignity, and remembrance with soft white blooms that illuminate the garden. Purrsian Blue Nepeta and White Profusion Salvia symbolize loyalty, honor, and calm reflection, while Violet Profusion Salvia adds depth and reverence through rich patriotic color.
Red Yarrow represents sacrifice and healing, honoring those who served and the hardships endured during wartime. Daisy May Daisy reflects hope and renewal, reminding visitors of peace achieved through courage. Oso Easy Double Red Rose symbolizes valor, sacrifice, and enduring gratitude, its vibrant red blooms serving as a living tribute to the courage and devotion of those who answered the call to serve.
Treasure Trove Rudbeckia introduces radiant gold tones symbolizing endurance, victory, and the light that emerges after conflict. Denim and Lace Russian Sage provides silver-blue texture reminiscent of military steel, blending strength with grace and resilience.
Together, these plantings create a timeless memorial landscape where every season tells a story of service, sacrifice, and gratitude. The Path of Service Memorial Garden stands not only as a tribute to the past, but as a living symbol of American resilience and remembrance for generations to come.
